Zan News: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan has announced that, in collaboration with its partners, it provided mine risk education to 3.1 million children and their caregivers in 2024.
Tajudeen Oyewale, the head of UNICEF’s office in Afghanistan, emphasized in a message on X on Wednesday (26 March) that “mine risk education saves lives.”
He noted that unexploded ordnance continues to pose a serious and deadly threat to children in Afghanistan.
It is noteworthy that Afghanistan remains one of the most contaminated countries with mines and unexploded explosive remnants of war. According to a United Nations report, 3.3 million people in Afghanistan live within one kilometer of mines and explosive remnants. These devices claim the lives of hundreds of civilians, especially children, every year.
