January 23, 2025
Zan News
Zan News: Hamish Falconer, UK Deputy Foreign Secretary, stated that defending the rights of Afghan women and girls remains a top priority for the British government.
In a video published on his official X account on Wednesday (January 22), he mentioned discussing ways to ensure humanitarian aid reaches the Afghan people with key officials and members of the United Nations.
Falconer emphasized that the Taliban's treatment of women and girls is unacceptable, adding: "Afghanistan is the only country in the world where girls are deprived of education beyond the sixth grade."
He strongly condemned the Taliban's recent decisions to ban women from studying medical sciences and prohibit them from working in non-governmental organizations, stating, "The Taliban must be held accountable. Afghan women and girls must not be forgotten."
According to the UK Deputy Foreign Secretary, the Taliban should not expect support or engagement from the international community if they continue their oppressive policies against women and girls.
It is worth noting that the UK has recently joined the initiative to refer the Taliban's case to the International Criminal Court for violations of women's rights.
Over the past three years, the Taliban have barred women and girls from attending schools beyond the sixth grade, universities, and working in non-governmental organizations.
