U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires: Half of Afghanistan’s Population Deprived of Human Rights

Zan News: Karen Decker, the US Chargé d'Affaires for Afghanistan, says that education is a fundamental human right for everyone, but unfortunately, in Afghanistan, half of the population is deprived of this basic human right.

In a statement released on Wednesday (September 25), Ms. Decker emphasized that the United States stands with Afghan women and girls who are deprived of education.

She announced her trip to New York and added that she had productive meetings regarding support for Afghan women.

The US Chargé d'Affaires also emphasized that the United States, in cooperation with international partners, including Qatar, is working to provide educational opportunities for Afghan women and girls who are unable to study in their own country.

Ms. Decker stated that international attention is focused on Afghanistan these days, with a strong focus on human rights and Afghan women and girls, as well as on education.

She also mentioned her meetings in New York, including a meeting with Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, and Rina Amiri, the US Special Envoy for Afghan Women and Girls.

These remarks come as the Taliban, after returning to power in Afghanistan, have banned girls above the sixth grade from education and subsequently barred female students from attending universities and private educational institutions.

This ban has prevented millions of female students from receiving an education. In addition, the United Nations and the international community have repeatedly called for the lifting of the ban on the right of girls and women to education in Afghanistan over the past three years, but the Taliban have so far ignored these demands.
