Russian Representative at the United Nations: Taliban's Policies Towards Women Are Non-Islamic

Zan News: Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, states that the Taliban justify their policies towards women and girls in Afghanistan with "Islamic standards," but in reality, these policies are not Islamic.

Mr. Nebenzya said on Monday (July 1) at the start of Russia's presidency of the UN Security Council that many Islamic countries are trying to explain to the Taliban that their policies are un-Islamic, but they do not listen.

He added that Russian officials have also repeatedly discussed women's and girls' rights with the Taliban, but they have their own views.

Russia's representative to the United Nations also spoke about the third meeting of special envoys on Afghanistan hosted by the United Nations.

Vasily Nebenzya said it is good that the Taliban were ultimately invited to the Doha meeting because it is impossible to resolve Afghanistan's problems in their absence and with the participation of civil society representatives, non-governmental organizations, and Afghanistan's former government.

He stated, "But it's difficult to say what results will come out of the Doha meeting. Everyone wishes well for Afghanistan, but the roadmap for how to achieve this varies from country to country, and the problem is in the details."

Russia's representative acknowledged the Taliban as the current reality in Afghanistan and stated that his country interacts with this group on that basis. In response to a question about the timing of removing the Taliban from Russia's list of terrorist groups, he did not provide a clear answer but mentioned that he has heard about the issue.

It should be noted that previously, Zamir Kabulov, Russia's Special Representative for Afghanistan, said that the proposal to remove the Taliban from the list of terrorist groups in Russia is on the table of President Vladimir Putin.

Since the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan, Russia has had extensive interactions with this group, but it has not yet recognized the Taliban as the official government and has not removed this group from its list of terrorist organizations.
