Purple Saturdays Movement: Calls for an End to Linguistic Apartheid Against Persian in Afghanistan

September 21, 2024

Zan News

Zan News: The Purple Saturdays Movement, in an open letter addressed to international organizations such as the United Nations, UNESCO, the UN Human Rights Committee, Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch, has called for the recognition of the linguistic apartheid imposed by the Taliban against the Persian (Dari) language in Afghanistan.

In this open letter published today, Saturday (September 21), the movement strongly condemned the Taliban's actions, emphasizing that over the past three years, the group has systematically sought to eradicate the Persian/Dari language.

The Purple Saturdays Movement also urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to trial and punishment the Taliban leaders responsible for this language apartheid and crimes against humanity.

Furthermore, the movement called on Persian-speaking countries like Iran and Tajikistan to end their silence regarding this blatant violation of cultural rights and to impose effective cultural sanctions against the Taliban to prevent language apartheid.

The movement stressed the importance of preserving the Persian/Dari language and culture as part of Afghanistan's national identity and warned that the continuation of this language apartheid could lead to significant cultural and social crises in the region.
