Floods and Storms in Eastern Afghanistan; 1500 Children Lose Homes

July 17, 2024

Zan News

Zan News: The organization "Save the Children" reports that around 1.36 million people, including 858,000 children, have been affected by climate changes in the provinces of Kunar, Laghman, and Nangarhar.

The organization released statistics indicating that around 1,500 children have lost their homes and are now without shelter due to recent heavy rains.

According to reports, the recent heavy rains and severe storms in eastern Afghanistan have resulted in the deaths of 47 people and injuries to at least 350 others. Additionally, 400 homes and a hospital in Jalalabad city have been destroyed by the recent floods.

Save the Children points out the worsening situation in Afghanistan, stating that the country is suffering from the worst humanitarian crisis in decades.

According to statistics provided by the organization, a reception center for returning migrants in Torkham has also been damaged by the floods. Reports indicate that about half of the 649,000 returnee migrants from Pakistan are children.

Furthermore, damage to telecommunications networks and the destruction of some roads have made it difficult to access the affected areas.

Save the Children emphasizes that Afghanistan is facing multiple crises, including the forced return of migrants, economic instability, food insecurity, earthquakes, climate change, and reduced humanitarian aid.

The report states that climate change and poverty have a particularly negative impact on children.

Arshad Malik, the head of Save the Children in Afghanistan, says, "Afghan children have endured years of suffering, and devastating floods have repeatedly caused destruction in this country."

Mr. Malik has called for increased international aid to meet the existing needs and to plan long-term responses to the climate change crisis.

Save the Children says that several teams have been dispatched to the affected areas to address immediate needs.
