Zan News: According to international media reports, Claudia Sheinbaum has emerged victorious in the preliminary results of Mexico's presidential election, becoming the first female president in the country's history.
According to Agence France-Presse, the National Electoral Institute of Mexico announced on Sunday (June 2) that preliminary results show Ms. Sheinbaum has won around 58 to 60 percent of the vote.
"I want to thank the millions of Mexican women and men who decided to vote for us on this historic day," Ms. Sheinbaum told her supporters who celebrated her victory with dancing and jubilation.
She also thanked her main rival, Xochitl Galvez, who conceded his defeat in the election.
Claudia Sheinbaum, 61, previously served as mayor of Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. She enjoyed the support of outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Mexico's ruling party.
Sheinbaum has stated that in addition to being the first woman in Mexico's history to reach the presidency, she is also the first person to win the most votes.
According to Agence France-Presse, nearly 100 million people had registered to vote in the presidential election in Mexico, which has a population of 129 million.
