Zan News: The Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting Foreign Minister, met with Roza Otunbayeva, head of UNAMA (United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan), and Georgette Gagnon, the new Political Deputy of UNAMA.
According to the ministry's statement, this meeting took place on Sunday, October 13.
The statement notes that during the meeting, Roza Otunbayeva introduced Ms. Gagnon to Amir Khan Muttaqi as the new Political Deputy of UNAMA and provided an overview of her professional background in various countries, especially Afghanistan.
Amir Khan Muttaqi expressed hope that with the start of Ms. Gagnon's role in Afghanistan, political relations between the Taliban and UNAMA would improve, and he assured cooperation in this regard.
According to the Taliban's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting also included discussions on UNAMA's activities and the United Nations meetings regarding Afghanistan.
This marks Ms. Gagnon’s first meeting with Taliban officials in her capacity as the new Political Deputy of UNAMA. She arrived in Afghanistan earlier this month to officially begin her duties, and she previously served as the Head of the Human Rights Section of UNAMA in Afghanistan from 2010 to 2015.
