Afghan Women in Conversation with Rina Amiri: Meetings on the Country's Future Must Include Full Diversity of Afghans to Be Legitimate

June 30, 2024

Zan News

Zan News: Rina Amiri, the U.S. Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls, and Human Rights, says she has spoken with a large segment of Afghan women and human rights networks inside and outside Afghanistan over the past three weeks and has heard their suggestions.

She shared these remarks on Saturday (June 29) in a message on her X (Twitter) page.

According to Amiri, these individuals suggested that decision-making meetings about Afghanistan's future should include the full diversity of Afghans, especially women, to be legitimate in the eyes of the Afghan people.

They emphasized that the international community should continue to pressure the Taliban to immediately revoke "discriminatory decrees" that restrict women's and girls' access to education, work, and other "repressive policies."

Amiri's comments come as Afghan women representatives have not been invited to the third Doha meeting.

This meeting, initiated by the United Nations and attended by representatives from 22 countries and several international organizations, is being held today, Sunday, June 30, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

Rina Amiri and Thomas West, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan, are also attending the meeting.
