Zan News: The research project "Afghan Witness," monitoring the human rights situation in Afghanistan, reports that over the past two and a half years, 332 women and girls in Afghanistan have been killed due to gender-based violence, and at least 152 more women and girls have been injured.

In a published report, the research institution has examined gender-based violence and the exclusion of women from Afghan society between January 1, 2022, and June 30, 2024.

The findings of "Afghan Witness" show that during this period, at least 700 cases of alleged gender-based violence against 840 women and girls were recorded across Afghanistan.

The report indicates that in addition to the 332 killings and 152 injuries to women and girls, 287 cases of alleged arrest, abduction, and forced disappearance were also recorded during this period.

According to the institution, 75 cases of alleged sexual assault, including attempted rape and sexual assault, were recorded during this time, and seven of the victims were killed after being assaulted and raped.

The report adds that in 75 cases of gender-based violence, minors were among the victims, and in 150 cases, family members and relatives were identified as perpetrators. Additionally, 141 women were killed and 16 others were injured as a result of domestic violence.

"Afghan Witness" emphasized that 28 cases of alleged torture, cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of women and girls in detention were recorded, resulting in the death of two individuals and injuries to five others. The report states that the Taliban have been held responsible for 422 cases of gender-based violence against women and girls.

The institution has stated that the actual number of killings and other cases of gender-based violence may be higher, as many cases go unreported.

The "Afghan Witness" report is based on an examination of claims raised on social media, media reports, journalists, and human rights activists, and it is stated that there is visual and video evidence in 109 cases of sexual violence against women.

This is while cases of murder, beatings, and torture of women have increased in various provinces of Afghanistan since the Taliban's return to power.
